Borough bans small change as payment for parking tickets

Three hundred pennies were deposited on the office desk of the Freeland Borough police clerk.

The copper lode was in payment of a $3 parking meter violation ticket.

The borough notified by letter the person who paid the fine, a woman who was not named.  She was sent a letter notifying that payment of the fine should be done with exchange of the pennies to paper money or in "larger" money, no coins under a quarter.

The borough put its foot down on that type of practice, stating that no small coins under 25 cents will be accepted for payment.

Here's how the parking meter violation fines work - $3 fine if paid within 48 hours; after 48 hours, $45; if not paid within 10 days, a citation is issue, which could result in a cost of $64.  Other parking violations other than meter violations carry a fine of $25 initially.
